2012-2013 Indoor Gardening Has Begun

Life's been busy and wonderful! Last year another successful year of indoor gardening with my students. We grew organic, bell peppers! It was much easier than the cherry tomatoes, so this year I will do my seed-to-seed unit with bell peppers! My goal is to post and share more.......

Here we go again-

Summer vacation comes to a close and an exciting first grade school year lies ahead! Looking forward to posting more often this year! As I remove photos of last year's wonderful group of children, I'm excited to add and get to know this year's group....

I'm a first grade teacher. My school has a small greenhouse and outdoor garden. The town I work in has a wonderful community garden that does hands-on school field trips for kids. As a teacher, I've used the school greenhouse and garden with my students and have taken them on local community garden and farmer's market field trips. The kids loved it and so did I.

It was time to start an indoor garden in my first grade classroom!

I found it so very powerful to put all three (indoor, outdoor, and community gardens) together for optimal learning about plants, healthy foods, and local and organic farming.

I chose to grow a cherry tomato garden the first year with my students. My post from April is about the garden in my classroom. The kids learned so much. Several families took the plants home when the school year ended, too -- that made me happy!

My interest in indoor gardening with LED grow lights has led to me to reading about Green Schools. Every year as a teacher, I implement more and more "green learning" into my classroom. The indoor garden is an easy way for children to observe the daily changes of a plant from seed to seed. As the plants grew, we grew as learners about plants and life.
